The-18-05-17 Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on 17 May said that Sharad Pawar, the NCP President, had declined Sonia Gandhi’s offer to become the Opposition’s candidate for President.The NCP said that the Opposition lacks the necessary strength and support needed for a strong candidate like their President. Naturally, the party wouldn’t want Sharad Pawar to be at the losing end of the polls.
Mamata Meets Sonia, Mum on Pranab
The news comes in a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the Congress President Sonia Gandhi in an effort to put up a consensus candidate for the upcoming presidential poll.Though Mamata had said that no names were discussed at the 40-minute meeting, the two leaders might have discussed the possibility of persuading the incumbent Pranab Mukherjee to seek a second term.
Congress in Talks With Various Parties
The Congress, meanwhile, said its leadership was holding talks with various parties in a bid to agree on a common candidate for the President’s post.The meeting between Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi was part of a series of meetings that the Congress president has been holding with other political leaders on the issue.
